A few observations - solely my opinion - the venue was fine, the room was good, the staff very friendly and helpful. We probably started a little too soon - if we waited until school was out, we probably had a better chance of getting people to drop in for at least a day or two, with no school conflicts.

What Do You Want To Play?
So what game(s) are you most looking forward to playing at Ludophilia 4? Please post your thoughts in the comments!
I think I'd have to say that my top choices this year would include, in no particular order:
1) Legacy: Gears of Time -- I got this time travel card game a couple months ago and I still haven't been able to play it. I still have never found the time travel game that really does it for me, but this one has gotten some fairly good reviews.
2) Terra Mystica -- Another new one. A few people played it last game day, but I wasn't in on it. This is one of the most lauded Euros of recent times, and I'd really like to give it a try.
3) Clash of Cultures -- I'm a sucker for civ-building games. This one has been sitting on my shelf since last Ludophilia, and I still haven't been able to get it to the table. It's bound to be pretty lengthy, so that's why it doesn't come out on regular game days, but if you can't play a game like this at Ludophilia, when can you play it?
4) Dune -- Glenn McMaster has drafted a new variant for the Fremen that is bound to make them a heck of a lot more awesome. In a nutshell, it's giving them a second set of 20 tokens that they can try to build up over the course of the game. Imagine a Fremen with 40 tokens on the board -- do you fear them now?? I promised Glenn that if he came down to Ludophilia from Toronto, we would definitely playtest it with him.
5) A Study in Emerald -- Martin Wallace's latest, based on a Cthulhu short story by Neil Gaiman. How could it miss, right? Unfortunately, the lack of discount and the some garish art previews scared me away from the Kickstarter. But since it was released, I've heard a lot of good things about it. I think Wray Ferrell is bringing this to try, and I definitely want in.
6) Time of Crisis -- Hey, speaking of Wray, remember the game he and I have been working on for what, like 5 years now? We playtested it at last Ludophilia. It's been 90% ready for a long time now, and we just haven't quite been able to close that last 10%. Well, Wray has done a lot of streamlining of the game, and it's very close to finally getting listed on GMT's P500, if all goes well. We could sure use another playtest at Ludophilia!

Feb 23 Update - Library spreadsheet is up!
SAVE THE DATE
The weekend for Ludophilia 4 is Thursday, May 15th, through Sunday, May 18th, 2014. Please mark your calendars! I know it's hard to believe right now given the weather, but May is right around the corner - it'll be here before you know it!
HOTEL INFORMATION
Ludophilia 4 will be held in a new location this year: The Country Inn and Suites in Crystal Lake, 600 Tracy Trail, Crystal Lake, IL, 60014. Phone: 815-477-3500. http://www.countryinns.com/crystal-lake-hotel-il-60014/ilcryst . We're getting a room that's almost 50% larger than the one we had last year, with the ability to keep bringing in our own food and drink. Be sure to make your room reservation now, and ask for our special group rate of $98 per night, which does include free breakfast.
LIBRARY SPREADSHEET
Thanks to Mark Ashton, the library spreadsheet for Ludophilia 4 is now up at http://tinyurl.com/ludo4lib .
You can go here to see what games other people are planning on bringing. Right now, it only lists games from me and Mark (and I have NOT updated my list to include my newest available selections yet), so please go add your own games that you can bring to play. There's also a place for you to enter games that you would like to request others to bring, if there's something particular you want to play that you don't have yourself!
ADMISSION COST AND EARLY REGISTRATION
In spite of the increased room cost this year, admission to Ludophilia 4 is still just $10 per person per day. Please remember to register early to get the "buy 3 days, get the 4th day free" bonus! That's a full 4-day weekend of open gaming with a large free game library for only $30 per person!
If you would like to take advantage of the bonus (or even if you just want to come for 1 or 2 days) and pay in advance, you can send a check for the proper amount to me at:
Brad Johnson
1517 Driftwood Ln.
Crystal Lake, IL 60014
Just include a note saying who's attending and for what days. I'll send a reply email that will be your receipt.
Thanks everyone, and I'm really looking forward to seeing you all again in May!

Even More Information!
NEW LOCATION!
Ludophilia 4 will be held in a new location this year: The Country Inn and Suites in Crystal Lake, 600 Tracy Trail, Crystal Lake, IL, 60014. Phone: 815-477-3500. http://www.countryinns.com/crystal-lake-hotel-il-60014/ilcryst This hotel is right off the main drag in Crystal Lake, basically right next door to a Culver's and very near a number of other places to eat as well. We're getting a room that's almost 50% larger than the one we had last year, with the ability to keep bringing in our own food and drink.
LODGING
I know I like to stay in the hotel for the duration of the gathering for maximum convenience and comfort. We have a small block of rooms held for us, so if you're planning on staying for 1 or more nights, you may want to call and make your reservation right away. Be sure to ask for our special group rate of $98 per night, which does include free breakfast.

ADMISSION COST AND EARLY REGISTRATION
Our total cost for the room is going to be $175 per day vs. the $100 per day we paid last year. That's going to be $700 for the room for 4 days. We have $266 in the bank from last year, and if we collect about the same amount of income as we have the last 2 years, we can cover the cost, at least for this year. So I'm leaving admission costs the same this year: $10 per person per day, and we'll still have the "buy 3 days get the 4th day free" bonus for those who pay in advance. That's a long 4-day weekend of open gaming for only $30 per person!

WHAT IS LUDOPHILIA?
For those who may have missed out for the last 3 years, Ludophilia is the name we've given to our annual local gathering for a 4-day boardgaming extravaganza in the northwest suburbs of Chicago! It's much too friendly and informal to be called a "convention". It's just an excuse for friends and friends-of-friends to get together in a large-ish hotel conference room with a couple hundred board games and have the chance to strategize, socialize, and relax uninterrupted. I bring a select library of games (and other people bring their favorites, too, of course), and then it's open house at the hotel Thursday through the Sunday! Set up your own lodging plans if you want to stay overnight, and everyone is responsible for their own food and drink.
SAVE THE DATE
The weekend for Ludophilia 4 is Thursday, May 15th, through Sunday, May 18th, 2014. Please mark your calendars! You'll see some additional reminders from me as the time draws nearer.
